Cole Hocker Stuns in Olympic 1500m Upset

Young American Outruns Favored Ingebrigtsen, Kerr

Hocker's Olympic Record Victory Highlights Breakout Performance

Cole Hocker of the United States pulled off a major upset Tuesday night, defeating heavily favored Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway in the men's 1500-meter final at the Paris Summer Olympics. Hocker, 21, ran an Olympic record time of 3:30.00, edging out Ingebrigtsen by just 0.1 seconds.

The victory was a stunning upset, as Ingebrigtsen had been the dominant force in the event all season. The Norwegian had won the past four Diamond League races and was the clear favorite heading into the Olympics. Kerr of Great Britain, the reigning Olympic champion, was also considered a contender but was forced to settle for silver with a time of 3:30.83.

Hocker's victory marked a breakout performance for the young American. The Oregon native is the youngest American man to win an Olympic 1500-meter medal since Mario Garcia in 1988. He is also the first American man to win a gold medal in the event since Matthew Centrowitz in 2016.
