WEB Argentina began their defense of the Copa América title with a 2-0 victory against Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday. Julian Alvarez scored in each half to give the defending champions a comfortable victory.

Argentina is seeking its third straight major title after winning the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 World Cup. They are the favorites to win the tournament again this year, but Canada is hoping to pull off a major upset.

The two teams played a scoreless first half, but Argentina took the lead in the 57th minute. Alvarez scored off a rebound after Lionel Messi's shot was saved. Argentina doubled their lead in the 78th minute when Alvarez scored again, this time off a pass from Angel Di Maria.

Canada had a few chances to score, but they were unable to find the back of the net. The Canadians will now face Brazil in the semifinals on Wednesday, while Argentina will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Venezuela and Colombia.
